its a place where God wants to take us

i believe that even if you have forgotten that dream

that God hasn't forgotten you.

and it all starts with the dream.

let's encourage each other to go for it

take basic black and add a punch of color

in this case he red sweater and rosette earrings add pizazz

it still looked bland so i added the necklaces and the outfit really sang

it's funny how much accessories take an outfit to the next level.

salad dressing recipe

i first learned to make salad dressing when i lived in france

it's easy peasy to make your own

let's go!

Mamma Allegra's Vinaigrette

ingredients:

4 tablespoons sugar

8 tablespoons mustard

-i like the brown mustard, but use watcha got-

1/4 cup-1/2 cup olive oil

3/4 cup balsamic vinegar

- i like the white balsamic, but red works great too-

you can also substitute red wine vinegar, or even some of those fancy-schmansy flavored vinegars

Since this is a home-style recipe, I never really measure anything

I just mix-taste-adjust

I did my best to measure the above ingredients, but feel free to adjust to your taste

instructions:

1. Add all your ingredients in a bottle or jar

-i love repurposing iced tea bottles or starbucks frappucino bottles-

2. Put lid on jar

3. Shake

-i always do this over the sink because i can never really get the lid on tight-

4. Taste

5. Adjust flavorings if necessary: if it's too tangy or mustard-ey, add more sugar

You can use it right now if ya like, but keep in mind, the flavors really settle in in a few days, especially the sugar.

i never would have thought that something

so simple

could bring me so much joy

for the past year

i had been pestering mr. handsome

ahh, clotheslines-

i researched them on amazon

i pinned them on pinterest

i have this fantasy, see-

of being this old fashioned type
who bakes all her own bread

sews all her own clothes

as far back as i can remember

i have dreamed about growing all my own vegetables

reading and playing games instead of watching tv
i don't know where i get it from
but that's my dream

i have found ways
here and there
to indulge my little dream
and in this past year
i've really gone for it

i've made my own laundry soap and deodorant

and tried my hand at gardening
found natural and homemade alternatives
for fabric softener and eye makeup remover

part of my fantasy involves me
hanging our clothes out to dry in the sun
the way our grandmothers used to
{and the way every one did when i lived in italy}

truth:

i used to hang clothes to dry on hangers in the spare bathroom

definitely unromantic
and so not my fantasy

plus, the out of sight out of mind factor
-i hardly ever use that bathroom-

had me "forgetting" the clothes were even there

not so cute

and then a few weeks ago
{yippeee}

we did it

we finally hung our little retractable clothesline

i take out the laundry

i clip it

i unclip it

and i connect

with generations of women

who have come before me
and i am living my little dream just a bit more

love that

roasted asparagus

Why is it that when I go out to eat and I order roasted vegetables they are so delicious, and yet I never make them at home? As if they are some elegant and hard-to-cook item that can only be ordered out but not prepared. Silly me! They are too easy to prepare. Are you ready?

Mamma Allegra's Easy Roasted Asparagus

Ingredients:

1 pound asparagus, ends trimmed

salt -i like sea salt, but use what you have

pepper- i like fresh ground, but use whatcha got

2 T olive oil- i like extra virgin, but you know the deal, use whatcha have

roasting pan or cookie sheet

optional- parchment paper

Directions:

preheat oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit

1. Wash and trim your asparagus. Trimming tip- take the asparagus and break off as close as you can to the end. It will be hard to break off at the very end, but at a certain point, the end will just snap off. I read somewhere that that was the best way to trim just the right amount off. I can't remember where.

2. Dry.

3. Lay asparagus on your pan or cookie sheet. If using parchment paper, lay on top of the paper. I like using the paper because it makes clean up of the baked-on oil a snap, otherwise I feel like I'm scrubbing for days.

4. Toss with olive oil and salt and pepper

5. Roast in oven for 8-15 minutes. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your asparagus.

6. Pretend you are in a fancy restaurant and enjoy!

i can do all things through Christ who strengthens me

whatever i am facing, i can get through it

i've been healed
oh boy, have i!

I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed,

you can say to this mountain

'move from here to there,' and it will move.

nothing will be impossible for you.

i have faith

i can speak to my mountain

nothing will be impossible for me

and right then

on my couch

-bodie, resting his head on my lap-

i got a changed heart

i remembered those scriptures

they are ones i've leaned on

and as i read them

i began to set my mind on things above

and it took my thoughts off of me

and i started thinking less of what isn't working for me

and more of how i can do something for someone else

it's amazing how that can happen
and my heart sings with gratitude
that i might be stuck
but i don't have to stay stuck

I have a relationship with God that is amazing. But it wasn't always like that. Back in the day, I never even wanted a relationship with God, nor did I have any idea how to get one. Then something happened.

My life started to unravel.

I didn't notice it at first. It was like a sweater that has a loose string. I'd pull at it. Snip off the bad bits. I'd tuck it under so no one could see. But all the while, that loose thread was there, and I was coming undone. Left to my own devices, I was quickly turning into a pile of thread, strewn spaghetti-like all over my life.

I was making decisions that were getting me in trouble. I was making the same mistakes over and over again. But finally, I made a decision to reach for help.

My journey to God has been slow and lovely. Little by little I began to trust someone other than me to run the show. And I started to build a relationship.

Trust.

Love.

I was ready to embrace them and believe there was Someone out there who had my best interest at heart and who would take care of me. In my book, Talking to God, I share bits of my story, and guide you on how to build that relationship, and how to talk to God. With practical tools, prayers, and building blocks to build your own relationship, this book is for anyone who wants more of God.

pizza night

i love to cook

but on weekends,

i roll simple

every saturday, we have pizza night

and since pizza is so easy to make

it's like not even cooking

Mamma Allegra's pizza

1. i use trader joe's organic tomato sauce

{only about 3 tablespoons! i don't like soggy crust}

and i save the rest in a jar in the fridge

2. i also use their pre-made whole wheat pizza dough

just roll it out on my pizza stone and i'm ready to go

{i forgot to take a picture of it in its packaging}

3. i load up on fave toppings

i love to mix fresh garlic in the mozzarella cheese before sprinkling on the crust

{this way it's more evenly distributed on the pizza}

for this one i did

mushrooms

baby heirloom tomatoes

fresh basil

garlic

{of course}

and peperoni on half

{for mr. handsome}

4. since i use a pizza stone, i put it all in a cold oven and set to 550

if you aren't using a pizza stone you can cook it on a cookie sheet

in a pre heated oven at 450

5. cook on the bottom rack

{this is the best pizza tip ever- it makes the crispiest crust}

6. when the cheese is hot and bubbly, pizza is done

7. i like to serve it with a mixed green salad

fun gift wrap tutorial

when i give several gifts at a time,

i like to coordinate them by using one color theme

for mr. handsome's birthday this year, i went with green as my color

and wrapped each present with some left over scrap fabric

wanna do the same?

here's how:

materials needed:

gifts in boxes

wrapping paper in solid color

{for this project i used brown kraft paper}

scrap fabric

clear packing tape

{packing tape seems to hold fabric down the best for me. you could always use a glue gun too}

1. wrap presents with wrapping paper

{not shown}

2. measure and cut a wide piece of fabric

make sure it is long enough to go around the short width of your box

{mine is about 7 inches wide}

3. measure and cut a thin, shorter piece

{mine is about and inch thick and about 4 or 5 inches long}

4. at the center of your wide piece,

tie the thin piece around it

like so

5. leave the knot on the underside of the fabric

{the print of your fabric should be facing outward}

so it looks like this

6. wrap around your package and secure with clear packing tape

{not shown}

7. i like to position my fabric "bow" on the upper third of the present

i just like that proportion,

rather than smack dab in the middle

I wish I could just hide forever. That's the way that I'm feeling today. For the last few days, I've been feeling the tears just behind my eyes, as if any slight motion would make them come tumbling down.

I'm all about being real. This little blog is not about making my life look perfect. And I will not hide the truth of who I am. Even today. And today, who I am is sad.

It's so hard to even write about it.
Again.

But here I am.
Living in the truth.

I want to pee on at that little stick, see those two lines, and holler, "horray!"

Instead I continue my waiting game. And the thing is, I haven't lost my faith. Not one bit. I believe that God will provide. My faith never wanes. This is such a new experience for me. Sadness with a side of vaguely depressed, yet still full of faith. I wonder to myself, "How is that possible?"

Yet it is so very possible.

I refuse to let depression overtake me. Quite simply, I refuse. I'm following the advice of a dear friend and mentor, I am feeling my feelings, but I am not being consumed by them. Yes, I want to stay in bed. All day. No, I do not want to eat a proper meal. Ever. I want to watch bad, silly television shows, read books and hide from my life.

Instead, I wake up and carry on. The tears are still there, residing in that place just behind my eyes. But today I carry on.

And I trust in God. My provider. My healer. My comforter.

I have never stopped believing that. Not once. And yet, my heart hurts. So I wish my life were a bit different than it is. A lot of people feel that way about their circumstances. Today I join them.
